Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works like roads, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings. It is traditionally broken into several sub-disciplines including environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, transportation engineering, municipal or urban engineering, water resources engineering, materials engineering, coastal engineering, surveying, and construction engineering Civil engineering takes place on all levels: in the public sector from municipal through to national governments, and in the private sector from individual homeowners through to international companies. Civil engineering is the broad Civil engineering focuses on the infrastructure of the world which include Water works, Sewers, Dams, Power Plants, Transmission Towers/Lines, Railroads, Highways, Bridges, Tunnels, Irrigation Canals, River Navigation, Shipping Canals, Traffic Control, Mass Transit, Airport Runways, Terminals, Industrial Plant Buildings, Skyscrapers, etc. In general, civil engineering is concerned with the overall interface of human created fixed projects with the greater world. General civil engineers work closely with surveyors and specialized civil engineers to fit and serve fixed projects within their given site, community and terrain by designing grading, drainage, pavement, water supply, sewer service, electric and communications supply, and land divisions. General engineers spend much of their time visiting project sites, developing community consensus, and preparing construction plans. General civil engineering is also referred to as site engineering, a branch of civil engineering that primarily focuses on converting a tract of land from one usage to another. Civil engineers typically apply the principles of geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, environmental engineering, transportation engineering and construction engineering to residential, commercial, industrial and public works projects of all sizes and levels of construction.
Civil Engineering is the art of directing the sources of power in nature for the use and convenience of man, for improvement of quality of life. The theory and practice of civil engineering is basically applied in the construction of Buildings & Structures, roads, bridges, aqueducts, positive work culture. The practical training in Civil Engineering is being offered with the following labs:-canals, river navigation ports, docks and harbors.
At ITM, Meerut, B.Tech Courses in Civil Engineering is offered with intake capacity of 60 .The goal of department is to produce high quality technical manpower needed by industry, R&D organizations, and academic institutions and above all to meet the engineering needs of the nation.
The academic activities of the Department emphasize deep understanding of fundamental principles, development creative ability to handle the challenges of Civil Engineering, and the analytical ability to solve problems which are interdisciplinary in nature.

The Department is known for its reputed faculty with expertise in diverse fields. Presently, the department has highly qualified, experienced, sincere and dedicated teaching faculty members, actively participating in research and consultancy work. During last 4 years, faculty members have published papers in reputed refereed and national journals.
The faculty also renders technical advice on live engineering problems to various Government and Private Sector companies throughout the country. These live projects are effectively used as training desk for our students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. RITES, Military Engineering Services, Municipal Corporations of Delhi, Faridabad, Gurgaon, Ghaziabad, NOIDA, PWD, CPWD, DDA, HUDA, Jal Nigam etc. regularly hire services for technical advice and vetting of designs of infrastructure projects. The Department has generated around Rs 200 million through consultancies during the last five years. In tune with the vision and mission of the Institute, the CE department has best of the core faculty members which includes Professors, Associate Professors and Assistant Professors.
The department has well-equipped laboratories for Computer Aided Design, Remote Sensing and GIS, Structural Engineering, Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulics and Water Resources, Transportation Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Building Materials, Surveying, and Engineering Geology. Students are imparted practical training in these laboratories with the objective to reinforce theoretical concepts taught in the classrooms.
